Why materials matter
The materials in the things we buy have a direct impact on the planet, and more shoppers are asking where a fabric comes from and how sustainable it really is. At Kind Bag, our bags are made from RPET fabric. Here's what that means.
What does RPET stand for?
RPET stands for recycled polyethylene terephthalate. Put simply, it's polyester made by recycling existing plastic, most commonly used drinks bottles. Instead of making new ("virgin") polyester from oil, RPET gives a second life to plastic that might otherwise end up in landfill, incinerators or the ocean.
How RPET is made vs. traditional polyester
Traditional polyester starts with crude oil, which is extracted, refined and processed into plastic polymers before being spun into fibre.
RPET starts with used plastic bottles instead. The bottles are:
- Collected and sorted by colour and quality.
- Cleaned to remove labels, caps and residue.
- Shredded into small flakes.
- Melted and re-spun into new polyester fibres.
- Woven into RPET fabric, ready to become products like our Kind Bags.

The benefits of RPET fabric
1. It reuses existing plastic
RPET is made from plastic that has already been produced, so it avoids making new polymer from fossil fuels. Life-cycle studies generally find recycled polyester needs less energy than virgin polyester, although the size of the saving depends on the recycling process and where it happens.
2. Durability and performance
RPET behaves much like ordinary polyester: lightweight, strong and easy to clean. Our Medium Reusable Bag, for example, carries up to 20kg and machine-washes at 30°C on a delicate cycle.
3. Less plastic waste
Every Kind Bag gives used bottles a new job. Our original Medium Reusable Bag is made from 6 recycled bottles, and we've repurposed millions to date.
What RPET isn't
- It isn't plastic-free. RPET is still polyester, just recycled polyester.
- It isn't biodegradable. That's why using the bag for as long as possible matters.
- It isn't automatically recyclable at home. Textile recycling for polyester is still limited in most areas.
